Ontario buildings are the real design problem

The two routes out are the same everywhere: a standard footprint where one genuinely fits, or a panelled room built to the space. Ready-made cooler units are faster and cheaper where the geometry allows, and custom-built cooler units exist because forcing a box into a room that cannot take it costs more in lost working space than the custom panels would have. Where the shell is sound but the plant is finished, replacement and upgrade work is often the better capital decision.
The agricultural half of Ontario
Ontario has the largest food processing sector in the country, and a large share of the province's refrigeration demand never touches a shopfront. The specification logic is the same as a national rollout: write the build standard once, then apply it site by site with documented exceptions where a building forces a change. What differs is that the exceptions can be surveyed properly rather than photographed and interpreted. Two Ontario realities affect dates more than anything else. Refrigeration fails in the heat, which means demand peaks in exactly the weeks when equipment and crews are hardest to secure. Questions From Ontario Operators
The ones that come up most often once a project is real rather than hypothetical.
Mainly it changes how much room there is to be wrong. An Ontario project can be surveyed, redrawn after you have seen the layout, and adjusted when the electrician opens the panel and finds less spare capacity than expected.
Outside this province those revisions have to happen before equipment ships, because a change after dispatch is a schedule event. Here it is a conversation. That is the practical value of buying from a supplier in your own province.
There is no minimum. A single cabinet replacement, a two-door display line or one small cold room are all normal Ontario work, and they are quoted by the same people who quote a multi-store programme.
What we will tell you honestly is when a job does not need us — if a straightforward standard unit on a sound slab is genuinely all you require, we will say so rather than design around it.
Northern Ontario is closer to the out-of-province model than to a GTA project, and it is worth being clear about that. Distances up the 11 and the 17 are long enough that a survey has to be exhaustive and delivery has to be planned as a single arrival.
The specification and the build standard do not change. What changes is how much is settled in writing before anyone travels, and how much of a spares kit goes with the room.
That is one of the most common Ontario constraints, and it usually has three possible answers: a ground-level position in the yard with a guard and a screen, a wall-mounted bracket where the structure and the neighbours allow it, or an interior plant location with the heat ducted out.
Which one is right depends on service access in winter, snow exposure, noise toward any residential neighbour, and what the lease actually permits. All three are priced honestly rather than quietly assuming roof access will be granted.
Continuous packing operations are a different problem from harvest-driven ones. Because product does not dwell, the constraint is usually staging throughput and door traffic rather than total volume — a smaller room that turns quickly, hard against the shipping doors, often beats a larger one further inside the building.
The variables worth settling early are how many hours a day the doors are open, how loads are consolidated, and whether the room has to hold anything overnight. Those decide the refrigeration duty far more than the floor area does.
Yes, and for operators with an estate that is usually the right approach. If you already hold a controller model, a door hardware schedule or a panel specification across your sites, quoting against it keeps your spares and your staff training intact.
Where we think a component in the standard is genuinely a poor choice for a particular building, we will say so in writing and price both options rather than substituting quietly.
Ontario does not impose the French-language commercial requirements that apply in Quebec, but plenty of eastern Ontario operators want bilingual signage and controller labelling anyway, particularly across the river from Gatineau.
