The four families, and what separates them

The commercial refrigeration solutions Ontario businesses buy divide cleanly once you stop thinking about equipment and start thinking about what the cold space is for. Cold rooms — walk-in coolers, walk-in freezers and custom cold storage — exist to hold volume where customers never go. Capacity, restock flow and pull-down under load are what matter.

Merchandising systems — glass-door coolers, glass-door walk-in coolers and commercial fridges — exist to put product in front of a customer at the moment they decide. Sightlines, door traffic, lighting and shelf presentation matter as much as the refrigeration behind them.

Specialty beer systems — beer caves and beer walk-in coolers — are their own family because nothing else in retail combines that turnover, that restock frequency and that customer expectation about temperature at the door.

Project services — design, delivery and installation and cooler replacement and upgrades — are the work around the box. On a live site they usually determine whether the project is remembered as smooth or painful.

Stock footprint or panelled to dimension

Every cold room here can be supplied either way. Ready-made cooler units come in standard sizes and take a shorter route to site, which suits straightforward rooms, like-for-like replacements and anyone working to a fixed opening date. Custom-built cooler units are panelled to the envelope your building actually gives you — useful when a column sits in the middle of the space, the ceiling drops under a duct run, or the access route will not pass a full-size panel.

Temperature duty is a build decision, not a setting

A freezer is not a cooler turned down. Insulation thickness, floor construction, door hardware, heater detail and defrost strategy all change below freezing, which is why walk-in freezers and commercial freezers are specified separately from their above-freezing equivalents. Where a site needs both — and a great many do — a combination room with a shared wall is usually cheaper to run and easier to install than two separate boxes, provided the layout allows it.

Where the refrigeration package sits is a second decision. Penthouse cooler and freezer systems mount the plant on the box, keeping floor space clear and service access simple. Specification changes by sector

The same walk-in behaves differently depending on who is using it. A grocery backroom is sized around delivery days and case counts. A restaurant walk-in is sized around service peaks and a tight footprint. A warehouse cold store is sized around pallets and forklift clearance.
