In almost every multi-site network, the above-freezing cold room is the most repeated piece of refrigeration in the estate. Every store has one. Most have only one. It carries the dairy, the produce, the prepped product and the overflow, and when it underperforms the whole backroom slows down. Footprint families instead of one-off design

The practical way to hold a standard across many stores is to work in footprint families rather than bespoke rooms. A small-format family, a mid-size family and a large backroom family, each with the same construction and hardware, each sized so the panel run can be shortened or extended without redesigning the room. A location in a compact Atlantic Canada store then gets the small family with a sliding door; a large suburban site in Alberta gets the large family with a double-leaf entry. Both are recognisably the same room.

Sizing inside each family still comes from real numbers: case counts by category, pallet or dolly footprint, delivery frequency and how long product dwells before it moves. Add aisle width for the equipment your staff actually use, clearance in front of the evaporator so air can throw the length of the room, and clearance above the top shelf. Choosing the refrigeration configuration across a network

Three configurations cover most sites. A self-contained penthouse package sits on the ceiling panel and needs only power and a drain. A side-mount package does the same where ceiling height is tight. A remote split puts the condensing unit outside or in a plant space and keeps heat and noise out of the working area.

Across a national estate the choice is not purely technical. Self-contained packages are easier to support at distance: fewer field-made refrigerant joints, a simpler swap if a unit has to be replaced, and a local contractor can work on them without inheriting someone else's pipework. Remote systems are still the right answer on large rooms, on multiple boxes sharing a plant, or where the room sits inside a customer-facing area — but they deserve a deliberate decision per site rather than a default. Packing, freight and what arrives on site

Panels ship as bundles, doors and frames as protected units, refrigeration packages crated, and shelving and trim consolidated with them so one delivery lands per site. Each store receives a written note of what is arriving, when, and what is needed to unload it — because a pallet jack that is not there on the day is a lost morning in any province.

Installation is then run as a booked project rather than a service call. Panels assembled, doors hung and adjusted, refrigeration set and connected, electrical coordinated, room pulled down and tested, and a controller walkthrough with the staff who will actually use it. Above-freezing rooms feel regional conditions differently from freezers. On the Prairies the issue is the outdoor condenser: winter head pressure control, summer capacity headroom, and a location that will not disappear under drifting snow. On the coast — the BC Lower Mainland and Atlantic Canada — sustained humidity is the driver, loading the evaporator harder and pushing water at the doorway, which makes door sweeps, thresholds and strip or air curtains worth specifying properly.

Questions From Buyers Specifying Coolers for More Than One Site

Yes, provided you standardise the build rather than the box. Panel construction, finish, door hardware, controller and shelving system stay fixed; footprint, panel run and door hand flex per store.

We usually work in three footprint families — small, mid and large — so a compact site and a large suburban one are still recognisably the same room to the staff and to whoever maintains it.

At distance, self-contained penthouse or side-mount packages are usually easier to live with. Fewer field-made refrigerant joints, a simpler swap if a unit fails, and a local contractor can work on one without inheriting unfamiliar pipework.

Remote splits are still right for large rooms, for several boxes sharing a plant, or where the room sits in a customer-facing space. The point is to decide per site rather than let one habit set the whole estate.

Panels ship as banded bundles with protected edges, doors and frames go as separate protected units, and refrigeration packages are crated. Shelving and trim are consolidated with them so the site receives one shipment.

Each store gets a written note of what is arriving and what is needed to unload it. Most receiving damage we have seen elsewhere comes from a site that did not know a flat deck was coming.

In most cases yes, by phasing the changeover. Product is moved to temporary holding or to an adjacent room, the old box is stripped after hours, the new room is assembled and pulled down overnight, and stock returns before opening.

Internal dimensions or a dimensioned sketch, photographs of the space and the route to it, ceiling height along that route, door and corridor widths, slab condition, nearest drain and the electrical supply at the wall.

For a distant site that package is what allows one survey to be enough. It is more than a local supplier would ask for, and it is the reason out-of-province rooms tend to land on schedule.

Where the operator wants it, yes — and it is usually worth it. The same shelving system, the same bay logic and the same product zones mean staff transferring between stores already know where things live.

Bay counts still change with the footprint, but the pattern holds. It also makes stock counts and merchandising audits comparable between locations.
