That model is slower to start than a local call-out and considerably more predictable once it does. For a single independent store it is one option among several. Climate

The Chinook Problem, and the Other One at Minus Forty

Most refrigeration specifications assume ambient conditions move slowly. Southern Alberta does not cooperate. A chinook can lift the outside air twenty-five or thirty degrees in a matter of hours in the middle of winter, then drop it back. Equipment sited outdoors has to work through that without hunting, short-cycling or losing head pressure control on the way down.

At the other extreme, a genuine cold snap puts outdoor condensing equipment well below anything a factory default setting contemplates. Without low-ambient control, a condenser in deep cold cannot maintain enough head pressure to feed the expansion device properly, and the room starves. The fix is a design decision made once — fan speed control or flooded head pressure control, correctly specified — not a service call in January.

Then there is summer. Calgary and Edmonton reach conditions warm enough that a package sized only for the cold end will run out of capacity in July. Alberta is one of the few markets where both ends of the ambient range have to be argued about in the same conversation.

Wind and drifting matter as much as temperature. An outdoor condenser sited on the lee side of a building in an open landscape will find itself buried, and a unit that cannot be reached in February cannot be serviced in February.

Commercial refrigeration in Alberta is dominated by two metropolitan markets and the highway that joins them. Calgary and Edmonton generate the familiar mix — grocery backrooms, convenience beverage walls, restaurant cold rooms, commissary and catering storage — usually in relatively modern buildings with rear service access, usable clear height and electrical service designed for commercial tenants. That is a straightforward brief, and it means Alberta urban work is frequently a good candidate for standard footprints and ready-made cooler units rather than fully custom panelling.

The QEII corridor through Red Deer adds distribution and commissary work, where the room is a staging function rather than an inventory: short dwell, heavy door traffic and cold consolidation against the shipping doors. Camp kitchens and remote-site food service

Alberta's remote-site catering sector is the part of this market that most often gets specified badly, because the assumptions borrowed from urban food service do not hold. A camp kitchen feeding a rotating crew is not resupplied daily. It is resupplied on a cycle, sometimes a long one, over a road that weather can close. That single fact changes the whole design: total storage volume per cover goes up sharply, frozen capacity carries proportionally more of the load, and running out of a staple is an operational failure rather than an inconvenience.

It also changes the hardware. Door traffic in a camp kitchen is heavy and often unsupervised, so hinges, closers, gaskets and interior protection are worth over-specifying. Power may be generated or shared, which puts real limits on starting current. And because a service call is a long way away, a spares kit travels with the room as a matter of course. Designing for a province with two climates a year

Alberta asks a refrigeration package to survive an unusually wide band. Deep cold requires low-ambient head pressure control so a condenser can still feed the expansion device when the outside air is far below anything a default setting anticipates. Warm summer afternoons require capacity headroom in the same equipment. And in the south, chinook conditions move the outside air by tens of degrees within hours, which punishes a control strategy chosen for a stable climate.

Two secondary effects are worth planning for. Drifting snow will bury an outdoor unit that has been sited without regard to prevailing wind, and condensate or defrost water will freeze in any run that passes through outdoor conditions untraced. Both are cheap to design and expensive to retrofit.

The southern processing belt

South of Calgary the market changes character. Irrigated ground around Lethbridge, Taber and Brooks supports vegetable and potato production and the packing and processing operations that follow it, alongside the feedlot economy. Rooms here are production infrastructure: they hold a process stage rather than an inventory, tolerate cleaning, take equipment through the door constantly and run to a shift pattern. What Alberta Buyers Ask First

Straight answers, including the ones about distance and winter.

It does, and it is one of the few genuinely province-specific design questions in Canada. Rapid ambient movement makes a condenser hunt if the head pressure control strategy was chosen for a stable climate, and short-cycling is hard on compressors and hard on room stability.

The answer is not more capacity. It is choosing fan speed or flooded head pressure control deliberately, sizing for both ends of the range, and setting defrost timing to suit conditions that move rather than sit still.

Yes, and remote sites are often better suited to this model than to a local call-out, because the whole project is planned rather than improvised. What we need up front is more than a local supplier would ask for: how the site is reached, how it is powered, how it is resupplied and what the offload situation is.

The room itself is then specified around the resupply cycle rather than a daily delivery, and it ships with a spares kit because a courier run is not a same-day option that far out.

Freight and mobilisation are real costs and we will not pretend they are not. What offsets them is the way the work is organised — one consolidated shipment, one thorough survey and one booked installation instead of a sequence of partial visits.

The honest advice is to compare scopes rather than headline figures. If another quote is lower because it excludes electrical coordination, removal of the old unit, pull-down verification or the spares that a remote site actually needs, that gap reappears later.

It does, in a way that surprises operators moving from a humid market. Low ambient humidity reduces latent load and frosting, which is helpful, but it also means unwrapped product loses moisture faster and a coil running colder than it needs to will accelerate that.

The design response is correct evaporator sizing and air throw rather than brute capacity — enough surface area to hold temperature at a modest temperature difference, with air movement that does not blast the product face.

In build standard, yes — same panel construction, same door hardware and hand, same controller, same shelving logic. That is the point of writing a specification once, and it is what keeps your spares holding and staff training sensible across both cities.

Where the buildings differ, the differences are recorded as documented exceptions rather than absorbed quietly, so you can see exactly where the two sites are not the same and why.

January installs happen, and for a store that cannot give up a summer trading week they are often the right choice. What changes is the plan around them: staging space indoors wherever the building allows, sealants and gaskets handled with cold-weather behaviour in mind, and a realistic view of what the road and the yard will be like.

We will not promise a fixed date through a stretch of the winter that the highway may take away. What we will do is agree a window and tell you immediately if weather moves it.

There are three defensible answers and they are genuinely different capital decisions. Size for the peak and accept idle capacity; build modular so panel runs can be extended before a bigger season; or split the requirement into separate rooms so part of the capacity can be shut down when it is not needed.

Which one is right depends on how sharp the peak is, how predictable growth looks, and whether the building has room to expand. We will lay out all three rather than quietly pick the largest.

It is agreed in writing before anything is loaded. That means offload method, whether a tail lift or site equipment is required, ground conditions for a loaded trailer, and where panels can be staged out of the wind.

Panels are large, light and awkward, and a windy open yard is the worst place to handle them. Planning a staging position indoors or in the lee of the building is a small decision that saves a great deal of trouble on the day.
